President’s Letter to Society Members

Our membership director Henry Brander and Communications Officer Jeremy Crawford have continued active in signing new members and the GLWS now boasts over 1600 members. Congratulations to them on that success. Thank you to all that have signed up. And all that active support. Here are a few current issues

Annual meeting. is set for August 26th at 10 AM at the Summer Village of Gull lake hall at 29 Lakeview Avenue. That is the development on the South side of the lake. Please reserve the date. The minutes of the 2022 annual meeting will be posted on our website.

The meeting will include an update on;

lake level history
progress on the stabilization system restoration and
Final report on the stream bed, settling pond projects
Our preliminary investigation into the potential for aquifer pumping into the lake
An update from Alberta Health on the safety of the water at our beaches
Presidents and treasurers and other reports and the
Nomination and possibly election of officers and board for the coming year.
We will also appoint some committees as it’s probably necessary to fundraise for the stabilization filter, let me know if you’re interested in serving.

Update on stabilization.

Our society did a presentation at the annual ratepayers meeting for the Parkland summer village. We believe Alberta Agriculture plans to apply for the installation of pressurized filtration on the stabilization system which would allow it to operate without the risk of transferring invasive carp. An application is required to the Alberta Environment under the Water Act. At present, this seems to be moving along well but it may be necessary to undertake a letter-writing and lobbying campaign if we see it get stopped. Hopefully, we will provide more details on this at the annual meeting.

Collecting data on the lakes importance

we have requested data from the four municipalities around the lake regarding the number of residences and campsites and assessment values. Our intent is to use that if we need to enter a lobbying campaign to show the value of the lake to Alberta.
